Student-Led Research in Focus: The Importance of Physical Activity and Healthy Lifestyle on Cognitive Performance

At DPS Monarch International School, education goes far beyond textbooks and classrooms. True to the school’s vision of “Education with a Difference,” students are encouraged to explore, question, and contribute to meaningful research that nurtures both academic curiosity and personal growth. The student-led research project titled “A Comprehensive Study on Cardiopulmonary Fitness, Lifestyle, and Its Influence on Cognitive Performance (Ages 14–17),” led by Ananya K. Jinesh and Arathi Subhash of Grade 11 C, under the mentorship of Ms. Neetu Balam, Head of the Biology Department is one such remarkable initiative.

The study was conceptualized with the understanding that adolescence is a formative stage for developing lifelong habits. The project aims to evaluate how do cardiopulmonary fitness and healthy lifestyle practices impact the cognitive abilities of school-going adolescents. During this project, the student researchers aspire to promote not only scientific awareness but also practical changes in everyday routines that can enhance both physical vitality and mental sharpness.

Forty students between the ages of 14 and 17 were carefully chosen as participants, and their progress was measured regularly using standardized scientific scales. The research incorporated multiple interventions, including structured exercise sessions designed under the supervision of school’s Physical Education Department. Special emphasis was placed on developing short, effective workouts that could be practiced within limited spaces, without the need for elaborate equipment. Alongside this, lifestyle awareness activities and sessions were conducted to highlight the importance of nutrition, hydration, adequate rest, and mindful living. To ensure both safety and accuracy, vital signs were monitored under the close supervision of the school nurse, while the physical education team guided the students in safe exercise habits, posture, warm-up routines, and gradual progression.

The project has already shown encouraging results at its mid-intervention stage. The project not only empowers participants but also sets an example for the wider student body, showing how physical wellbeing is valued alongside intellectual growth.
